Eco-Pilot Case Study

Case-Study

Eco-Pilot is a navigation app that serves a single purpose: saving the planet from carbon emissions, while rewarding the user in the process. Unlike traditional GPS apps, this app prioritizes speed while performing the perfect eco-friendly route. Users also earn rewards for making greener decisions, which can be redeemed. Some rewards are sports tickets, discounted public transportation, and free merch.

Transportation is expensive and contributes to CO2 emissions, which harm our planet’s atmosphere. While navigation apps exist, drivers save time while reducing their carbon footprint.

Key points why Eco-Pilot is essential:

  • Causing a plethora of carbon emissions, which impacts the environment tremendously
  • Users lack mobility options
  • Users are unable to get rewards for their deeds

Goal

Eco-Pilot aims to encourage positive, alternative routes to your destination to minimize emissions. Doing this will award the user with rewards from the application’s built-in point system. This will not encourage people to use our app, but make the world a better place because “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that somebody is gonna save it”. I chose this Robert Swan quote because it captures everything this app will be. Nobody is going to do anything if we wait for it to stop.

The Problem

For centuries, our world has been plagued by pollution. Transportation, Factories, and pure CO2 emissions are ruining our environment faster and faster. Additionally, there were no strong incentives to choose an eco-friendly alternative to get to your destination. The gap in this market has yet to be developed, and Eco-Pilot will fix this issue that has been plaguing our planet for centuries.

Research

A competitive analysis of apps such as Google Maps and Apple Maps reveals that most users lack focus on features, especially among younger users. While some offer fuel-efficient routing, none showcase the visual impact or do anything to protect our planet while integrating a rewards system. This kind of app confirms that there is a marketing gap for a GPS tool that aligns with an eco-friendly idea.

Development

This app was built using Figma, a website builder, and the Eco-friendly route optimization algorithm was implemented. This app took 3 months to construct, and the beta was launched in 2025. The app will be fully released in the future, along with new features, because this version is currently a demo and cannot operate at this time. We are super excited about the direction we have chosen for this app, and we look forward to all of our future supporters and users who enjoyed the demo.

Demo Results

We gave three people the opportunity to test out Eco-Pilot, and most of the feedback was positive, with a couple of critiques, including a lack of features and some incomplete ones. Eco-Pilot provided more than a demo; it was a beacon of hope for the demo testers, helping make the world a better place. The usability test link is here.

Conclusion

Eco-Pilot demonstrates how an incredible design can inspire humanity to make the world a better place. By encouraging eco-friendly routes and choices and rewarding users, this app could help save our planet’s future and meaningfully improve our environment. When I first started this project, I had two things on my mind: creating an eco-friendly navigation app to save the environment and to bring humanity together so we can fix this issue as a team. Eco-Pilot is more than a navigation app; it’s a solution, and I believe we can all do it together, one trip at a time. As Robert Swan says, “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that somebody is gonna save it”.
